With the completion of the renovation and expansion of the public jail in Isla Mujeres, the 21 inmates were returned, from the facility in Playa del Carmen, with assistance from the Navy of Mexico and their "Interceptor" boats.  Initially it was thought that the construction would take 45 days, but in the end it took two months. The Chief of Police, Joaquin Poot Acosta, says that the improvements were worth the wait. He said of the 21 prisoners, four have been sentenced and the rest are in process (procesados).

After complaints about the lack of medicines at the pharmacy of the General Hospital, the Director David Valenzon Loaeza confirmed the arrival of the drugs that were in short supply. He said they are taking steps to prevent such drug shortages, which are caused by the large number of  patients who are seen weekly. He said they are implementing a system to note when stocks start to dwindle and the Ministry of Health has tripled the budget for the procurement of medicines.

The manager of Aguakan, Jose Pinzon Saravia said the underwater pipeline, which supplies tap water to the island is in perfect condition and has no problems. The pipeline was installed over ten years ago and is ten inches in diameter. It receives an underwater inspection twice per year. He said the pipeline is in perfect condition, but it is not free from external challenges such as boat traffic, which is why it is inspected regularly. He said it has even been tested by the passage of recent hurricanes, such as Wilma, but no problems were found.

Green area rescued by neighbors

There were allegations that a public area near the walking path at Salina Grande was being claimed and occupied by private individuals. The reporter found that this was an abandoned area which (unnamed) neighbors have rescued and where they have planted ornamental plants. Neighbors explained that they have permission from the Chief of Police, Joaquin Acosta Poot to park their vehicle there, and that authorities are aware that they have planted ornamental plants. They  water the area and clean the site regularly, which was neglected, rather than waiting for the government to take charge, for the sake of the environment, and not for them selves, they explained.
This area is located near a small pond that was rescued by the Federal Congress four years ago when the project for the Blue Dome was modified. This body of water had provided habitat for marine species and protected plants such as mangrove have been filling it in as planned. Today there are migratory birds, but it needs cleaning around its perimeter.

NEED DIABETES SUPPLIES FOR OCTOBER DIABETES CLINIC: We have been doing Diabetes Clinics on Isla Mujeres for five years, with more local residents participating annually. This is a joint project of bilingual social workers, nurses, and other health care professionals originally from the USA, working with Isleno community partners. Diabetes is now the primary cause of death in Mexico.

We are in great need of donations of glucometers and strips, specifically these brands: Contour, Contour Next and OneTouch. Many doctor's offices, clinics and hospitals discard strips that are almost expired. Strips are actually still effective for at least a year after expiration dates so often those are the ones that are most often donated. If you have any contact with medical professionals or pharmaceutical reps, you can often get current supplies. We can also use lancets, lancet devices, alcohol pads, and syringes.

The next clinic will be in October 2014. Contact Karen Rosenberg at kfrlisw@gmail.com or Kathy Ennis at kathy@kathyandkeith.mx or FB either of us. We accept monetary donations too and will buy strips to bring down.

Follow up...The Go Fund Me campaign by Sally Margolis to assist with the HIV testing events by Brazos Abiertos was successful, & BA have also coordinated with the City to provide education about sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy in the schools, monthly.
