When it's not Chana, it's Juana for the fishermen! ("Cuando no es Chana, es Juana, o su hermana" is a saying about obstacles which is similar to "If it's not one thing, it's another")

The lobster fishermen are complaining about a lack of demand for their product, which is selling for 200-220 pesos per kilo for live lobster, and 400 pesos/kilo for tails. The best catches were by the fishermen staying at the Isla Contoy camp, until they exhausted their food and fuel. Fishermen going out on boats are bringing in a average of 15-20 kilos of both live lobster and tails.(That is 181p per pound for tails, which at an exchange rate of 12.5 is $14.48/lb. Whole lobster at 210p/kilo would be 96p/lb or $7.68/lb).

So far the Sea Turtle Protection program has gathered 52,000 eggs for incubation, from a total of 521 nests. Of these 465 are green turtles, 50 are loggerheads, and 6 are hawksbill.  Last year by July 10th they had collected 26,772 eggs from 229 nests. Last Wednesday they had the second hatching with 37 emerging from a nest with 90 eggs. There were some eggs collected before the official start of the season in May. This year they are expecting to release more turtles than last year. The turtles are spawning on the eastern beaches, and the eggs are incubated at a special area of the Tortugranja. (The releases are done at public events where they encourage tourists and children to participate, at dusk on the Media Luna or Guadalupana beaches The green turtles, called Blancas in Spanish for their white undersides, take about 60 days to hatch. Sex and length of incubation can be affected by sand temperatures. )

Dogs who are loose in the streets spread trash, leave feces, and pose a hazard to drivers, especially those on motorcycles. There is a problem with a group of dogs in La Gloria, by the street Paseo de las Aves, where they chase people on motorcycles or bicycles. The awareness campaign launched by the municipal authorities about the need for owners to keep pets on their property has not had the expected effect. They are causing a bad image for this tourist destination & residents are complaining.

Mosquitoes are annoying the residents of La Gloria, Sac Bajo, and Electristas, while the agency that combats them is unable to spray during rain or wind. Islanders are reminded to remove anything in their yards that could provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and that they should give access to staff from the Vectors department who review yards for potential breeding sites.

It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana beaches. The releases will probably begin later this month (July) & be held periodically until early October.
Lately the water has been very calm and there have been many manta rays, with many swimming upside down, in addition to many whale sharks. Offshore from MVC, we have been seeing dolphins & turtles from the balcony, and lotsa big fish while snorkeling.

There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.
